Orange County Firefighters Demonstrate Newly Developed Position Location and Personnel Tracking System

Orange County, FL - Tuesday, March 16, 2004 - the Orange County Fire Rescue Department will participate in the demonstration of a newly developed position-location and personnel tracking system, developed by MeshNetworks, Inc. The system, which utilizes wireless broadband networking technology, can be used to locate, track and communicate the movement of firefighters and other emergency personnel inside a structure.

Demonstration of the MeshTrack Device will be performed throughout a series of live fire training drills being conducted by the Orange County Fire Rescue Department, in Northwest Orange County. Firefighters preparing to enter the burning structure will be provided with the small, lightweight-tracking device that will transmit position-location to the receiving device located at the Command Post, outside the structure. Downed personnel can be quickly identified, located, and extracted from dangerous situations.

“When things go wrong on a fire scene, knowing the exact location of firefighters in a building is the difference between going home to family – or not,” said Bill Godfrey, Deputy Chief of Training, for the Orange County Fire Rescue Department. “MeshNetworks has put on the table the technology for real-time location of first responders in a building, and we are committed to validating that technology.”

The Orange County Fire Rescue Department and MeshNetworks, Inc., out of Maitland, FL, have been working to development this system since December 2002.
