MeshNetworks and Cheetah Wireless Deploy Mobile Broadband Network for City of Las Vegas
Entertainment Capital of the World Embraces Mobile Mesh Networking For Intelligent Transportation and Public Safety Agencies

MAITLAND, FL - August 25, 2004 - MeshNetworks, Inc., the industry leader in mobile mesh networking solutions, and Cheetah Wireless Technologies, Inc (CWTI), a provider of mobile broadband wireless systems, today announced the deployment of a MeshNetworks Enabled Architecture (MEA®) wireless broadband network throughout downtown Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Traffic Engineering Department and other city agencies, including public safety and code enforcement, will perform an extensive battery of tests to evaluate the network. Upon successful completion of the trial, the city will have the option of expanding the coverage of the MEA network over the entire 58 square mile metro Las Vegas area.

As one of the fastest growing metropolises in the United States, the city of Las Vegas has earned a reputation as a leader in utilizing new technologies to improve the day-to-day lives of its citizens. In conjunction with the Freeway and Arterial System of Transportation organization (FAST) of Nevada, the city is trialing the high-speed MEA wireless data network for traffic management applications.

“We are looking forward to testing this high-speed wireless data pilot program,” commented Jorge Cervantes, Assistant Traffic Engineer for the City of Las Vegas. “The deployment was very simple and the equipment installed is low-profile and non-intrusive. We are hopeful that a wireless mesh network could be a cost-effective way for the City of Las Vegas to provide a more efficient system to serve its citizenry.”

MEA’s end-to-end support of industry standard IP enables a wide range of high bandwidth applications including:

  • High-speed transmission of large data files such as blue prints, barricade plans, access to the city’s Geographic Information System (GIS) files, aerial photographs, Hansen Information Technologies’ (Hansen®) Service Request and Work Order modules, and other high bandwidth applications to laptops and PDAs.
  • Remote access to signalized intersection’s Emergency Vehicle Preemption system by the Traffic Engineering Division to download authorized vehicle encoding information, helping to prevent unauthorized preemptions and traffic disruptions.
  • Remote monitoring of intersection video detection cameras by the Traffic Management Center, as well as Metro Police and Fire Services.
  • Peer-to-peer communication between field maintenance personnel using their laptops.
  • Instant tactical networking using MEA’s “Zero Infrastructure” client meshing technology.

“We are pleased the City of Las Vegas has chosen us for this state-of-the-art system. This project validates our business model and shows that a public/private partnership can produce a win-win result,” said Mitchell Gonzalez, President of Cheetah Wireless. “We are confident that other municipalities would also benefit from the unique technology and partnership approach CWTI offers.”

Cheetah Wireless chose to deploy a MEA network because it uniquely met the operational, deployment and reliability requirements established by Las Vegas. Unlike cellular and other mobile broadband technologies, MEA offers symmetric uplink and downlink data rates of 512Kbps to 1.5Mbps, and provides “always-on” connectivity, even at speeds over 100mph. MEA offered simple integration with the city’s existing applications, computer systems and core network infrastructure. MeshNetworks products boast rugged hardware and robust software that has been proven to reliably operate in the extreme summer and winter temperatures found in the Las Vegas desert.

“Las Vegas, like many other forward-thinking cities, has discovered the benefits and cost savings that a MEA mobile broadband network can deliver,” stated Paul Mueller, Vice President of Sales at MeshNetworks. “We are pleased that through our close partnership with Cheetah Wireless, we are able to provide Las Vegas with a high performance wireless solution.”

MeshNetworks’ solutions leverage battlefield networking technology originally developed for the US military under DARPA directed programs. As a result, MEA contains important capabilities not found in competitive solutions, including: a layer 2 routing engine, ultra-fast route acquisition, dynamic bandwidth allocation (fairness), real-time congestion management, QoS, assignable user priority, mobile handovers and proven scalability.
