MeshNetworks Announces First Commercial Sales of Breakthrough Wireless Broadband ProductsFirst of its kind ad hoc peer-to-peer wireless networking solutions address a variety of applications for diverse customer base

MAITLAND, FL, November 18, 2002 – MeshNetworks, Inc. today announced that it has shipped commercial quantities of Mesh Enabled Architecture™ (MEA™) mobile broadband and MeshLAN™ Multi-Hopping™ 802.11 products to customers. Demand for both products comes from traditional communications companies, as well as from customers outside the communications industry with specific applications that existing wireless technologies cannot serve.

Initial system sales have been made to a wide range of customers including:

  • One of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers
  • One of the world’s largest consumer electronics companies
  • Internationally recognized wireless systems manufacturers
  • Four of the largest defense and public safety system integrators
  • Established WISP and public mobile data service providers

MEA and MeshLAN products leverage MeshNetworks’ patented ad hoc routing technology to create self-forming and self-healing wireless broadband networks. This results in lower cost and higher reliability than alternative solutions. Applications for MEA and MeshLAN products include national defense, public safety, industrial control and monitoring, mobile public Internet access, consumer applications, corporate LAN, 802.11 hot spots, and transportation-centric services.

Viasys Corporation, which deploys Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for Departments of Transportation around the country, is one of the system integrators purchasing a MeshNetworks solution.

“Prior to 9/11, ITS was a method to reduce congestion and increase the safety of the motoring public. Today it is an essential element for securing our nation's transportation infrastructure and the only way to enable quick evacuation of metropolitan areas,” said Lance McNeill, President and CEO of Viasys Corporation. “ITS requires high-bandwidth communications to facilitate systems talking with each other, and MeshNetworks' products allow us to interface these systems faster and with fewer disruptions to traffic."

Unlike cellular and tower-based solutions, MEA and MeshLAN clients can instantly form large peer-to-peer broadband networks, no network infrastructure or towers needed.

"MeshNetworks' self-forming, self-healing technology is a critical component in military and public safety applications," said Louis C. Dollive, President of ITT's Aerospace and Communications Division. "Couple this with the ability of the system to work with or without network infrastructure and you have an exceptional communications solution for every solider, or member of an emergency first-responder team. The net result is that all users get immediate and dependable communications."

MEA mobile broadband is engineered for wide-area deployments, and provides users with high-speed data, voice, and video. It also offers built-in precision 3D location capability. The technology is 100 percent IP-based, so all existing Internet compatible devices and applications work transparently without any changes or alterations.

The same routing technology enhances industry-standard 802.11 (Wi-Fi) to create MeshLAN, a high performance meshed local area network solution. MeshLAN expands coverage, capacity and scalability of traditional wireless LANs, while increasing robustness and cost effectiveness of the network.

MeshNetworks also announced today that the company has restructured to support its commercial product launch. According to Richard Licursi, the newly named CEO of MeshNetworks, "This launch makes it clear that the company has migrated successfully from having great technology to being able to deliver great products. The market’s response to our entire product portfolio has been very positive, enabling us to generate immediate revenues.”

Licursi, who co-founded MeshNetworks in March 2000, brings to the company a long record of successfully leading technology companies. He served as President and CEO of Cincinnati Bell Information Systems (CBIS), now Convergys (NYSE: CVG), during its initial years and was instrumental in establishing the company as the world's premier wireless customer care and billing services company.

MeshNetworks is currently demonstrating its breakthrough technology and products at COMDEX in Las Vegas through November 22, daily from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Booth 11050) and will host a featured two-hour technical session at the 802.11-Planet Conference in Santa Clara on December 3, 2002 (Booth 507).
