MeshNetworks Announces Availability of its Mobile Broadband Modem Technology in a PC Card
Mobile broadband networking solution first to combine high-speed performance with complete user mobility

Orlando, FL.- December 10, 2001- MeshNetworks, Inc., today announced the availability of its new disruptive mobile broadband technology in an industry standard PC card. MeshNetworks’ solution leverages industry-standard Internet Protocol (IP) and patented peer-to-peer routing to offer mobile users data rates that are equal to or better than DSL and cable modems. “This technology will fundamentally change the mobile communications industry,” according to Masood Garahi, Chairman and CEO of MeshNetworks.

“To effectively meet rising consumer demand for mobile data applications, any wireless solution must be high-speed, low-power and low-cost, all in a small form factor to be successful,” said Mr. Garahi. “MeshNetworks PC card is a great solution for portable, battery-powered platforms such as laptops, PDAs and multimedia entertainment devices.”

The MeshNetworks’ PC card represents the first time a multi-megabit, IP-based mobile networking solution has been made available in such a compact and power efficient device. Users can now access high-quality streaming audio, video and web browsing – even when moving at highway speeds. Quality of Service (QoS) management for voice, video and data ensures excellent user service levels, regardless of the applications. In addition to its broadband networking capabilities, the MeshNetworks’ PC card also offers built-in position location, instantly making any MeshNetworks’ enabled device location-aware.

The patented peer-to-peer, ad-hoc networking software and ASIC technology utilized in the PC card is now available to OEMs for embedded applications.

MeshNetworks’ PC cards allow users to easily connect to the Internet, wireline telephone service or corporate networks. They can also operate in a peer-to-peer mode to set up private broadband wireless networks - without network infrastructure. MeshNetworks’ self-forming and self-healing routing technology allows users to automatically move between WAN, LAN and PAN networks using a single low-cost PC card. Users can transparently switch modes as their needs and applications change. The technology is currently showcased in the Maitland, Florida demonstration network.

“What makes the mesh solution compelling is that its self-forming and self-healing characteristics make deployment and operational costs so much lower than competing technologies,” said Peter Stanforth, CTO for MeshNetworks. “The effect can be as much as an 80% reduction in a carrier’s network cost.”

The card meets all Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) Type II physical, interface and power requirements. The ad-hoc routing technology has been designed to be “radio agnostic” and can integrate with many radio modulation standards, such as 802.11, Bluetooth, ultra-wideband, and others. MeshNetworks technology provides an easy way to add wireless broadband connectivity to a wide array of devices, including laptops, PDAs and the newly introduced tablet PC’s. The cards take full advantage of the networking technologies and infrastructures developed by MeshNetworks.

About MeshNetworks, Inc.
MeshNetworks has developed a revolutionary mobile broadband network architecture based on patented ad hoc peer-to-peer (p2p) routing technology. The result is a self-forming, self-healing wireless mesh where mobile devices become the network. MeshNetwork’s Multi-Hop™ routing technology offers non-line-of-sight broadband connectivity, while eliminating the need for towers and extensive system design. Industry standard Internet Protocol (IP) support lets existing applications and devices “go mobile” without any changes or additional development. MeshNetworks can address the needs of both mobile and fixed wireless broadband applications. MeshNetworks is making its breakthrough technology available through licensing, chipsets and turnkey network products. MeshNetworks employs nearly 100 professionals, including top authorities on ad hoc peer-to-peer networking. A demonstration network is deployed in Maitland, Florida, near the Company’s headquarters. MeshNetworks is a venture-backed startup, whose investors include: Apax Partners, BancBoston Ventures, Inc., ITT Industries, Redwood Ventures, and 3Com Ventures.
