MOTOROLA MESH NETWORKS SOLUTION  TRANSFORMS THE WAY  MINNESOTA TOWN COMMUNICATES

High-Speed Data Network Delivers Seamless Mobility and Instant City-Wide Access to Internet Based Applications and Databases.

Maitland, FL – February 28, 2005 – Motorola today announced that Buffalo, MN has gone live with its Motorola Mesh Network solution, offering high-speed mobile broadband access to police and other city employees.  As a result, Buffalo police patrol cars are now mesh-enabled, transforming them into mobile broadband offices.

Police officers now have instant high-speed access to mission critical data, video and multimedia communications providing them with greater situational awareness as they arrive on the scene of an incident.  Additionally, 40 public works vehicles, along with other community agencies, are using the high-speed broadband network to completely transform the way the city communicates and serves its residents.  Public works crews can now access job site information while in the field, thereby eliminating trips back to headquarters and accelerating service response times.

“After examining a number of solutions that utilized WiFi or the public cellular network, we found nothing could offer the throughput, security and capacity of the Motorola Mesh Network,” stated Merton Auger, Buffalo City Administrator. “Motorola allows us to push the desktop into the field, giving officers instant access to mission critical information.”

Motorola’s Mesh Networks technology was originally developed for the military battlefield in order to provide instant, ad-hoc communication networks where fixed infrastructure was not available or deployable. As a result, users receive a robust, mobile broadband communications network that is self-forming and self-healing. The technology is capable of  delivering seamless broadband connections to vehicles moving at highways speeds.  The Buffalo system also features Motorola’s unique Multi-Hopping® capabilities that turn each mesh-enabled radio into its own router/repeater.  This capability allows users to hop through other users to reach network access points.  As a result, every user makes the network stronger – extending network coverage and creating more data paths through the network. Motorola’s Mesh Network products also offer fast and accurate tracking capabilities without the use of GPS satellites.

For the past decade, Buffalo (located 40 miles north of Minneapolis) relied on a text-only network for its mobile data communications. The city is using the mesh network to power public safety mission-critical applications, including in-field reporting, and access to the state’s criminal database from the officer’s patrol car. Applications for public works employees in Buffalo include mobile data and video access to the Computer Aided Dispatch system, which provides up-to-date electrical wiring diagrams and city maps to the work site.

Buffalo is the latest to join a growing list of international municipalities that have installed city-wide Mesh Network mobile broadband solutions to enhance mission critical communication capabilities. Scientel America provided the project management and systems integration for the Buffalo network.

Motorola added Mesh Network products and technology to its wireless data solutions portfolio as a result of the successful acquisition of MeshNetworks, located in Maitland, Florida. The acquisition was made and completed during the Fourth fiscal quarter of 2004.

“We are proud to announce the deployment of our Mesh Networks mobile broadband solution,” stated Juergen Stark, Corporate Vice President, Motorola. “Buffalo is a great example of how municipalities are using mobile mesh networking to provide their law enforcement and public works employees with internet-age tools in order to better serve and protect the public.”
