Motorola Unveils HotZone Duo™, Providing High Performing, Cost-Effective, and Scalable Municipal Wireless Access

Apopka, Florida Chooses MOTOMESH Duo for Innovative Design and Rich Feature Set

Schaumburg, Ill., June 19, 2006 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today introduced its MOTOMESH Duo solution, a high performance, cost-effective meshed WiFi network, that provides scalable, area-wide wireless broadband access to large and small municipalities.  The MOTOMESH Duo solution is designed to maximize throughput and coverage, and can deliver the connectivity needed by municipalities while, at the same time, meeting aggressive cost and return on investment (ROI) targets.

The solution is part of Motorola’s MOTOwi4™ portfolio of wireless broadband solutions and services that creates, complements and completes IP networks. Delivering IP coverage to virtually all spaces, MOTOwi4 includes Fixed Broadband, Mesh, Broadband over Powerline, and WiMAX solutions for private and public networks. The MOTOMESH Duo solution is expected to be available in the third quarter in North America.

The MOTOMESH Duo solution leverages innovative Motorola design to enable a choice of either single radio (2.4GHz, 802.11b/g) or dual (2.4GHz, 802.11b/g and 5.8GHz, 802.11a) network configuration to best meet coverage needs.  Utilizing two radios enables dedicated user accessibility on one channel by carrying all network backhaul traffic on the other. This configuration can increase throughput by up to100 percent, and dramatically reduce packet latency and interference issues. High performance radios deliver 36 dBm EIRP, the maximum legal transmit power, and -100dbm receiver sensitivity to maximize coverage and minimize nodes per square mile.

Apopka is the first city to offer its citizens WiFi access using a beta system deployment of the MOTOMESH Duo solution.

“Offering high speed WiFi access to our citizens, businesses and city agencies in Apopka is a high priority for us in 2006,” said Mr. Richard Anderson, city administrator, Apopka.  “As the second largest city in Orange County, we knew we needed a state-of-the-art system to give us the capacity and scalability to serve our community.  Motorola’s MOTOMESH Duo solution gives us the performance and flexibility we need, in a form factor smaller than a shoe box – all designed and installed by Motorola, it was win, win, win all the way around.”

The solution also leverages proven technologies to enable a robust self-forming, self-healing wireless network.  Motorola’s exclusive MeshConnex™ routing minimizes network overhead, while delivering fast route convergence and low hop latency.  While

MeshManager™, Motorola’s carrier class Element Management System (EMS) provides configuration, security policies, reporting and Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates.

“Progressive cities like Apopka will deploy MOTOMESH Duo networks to help boost economic development, enhance delivery of government services and provide greater citizen access to broadband services,” said Eduardo Conrado, vice president of marketing and communication, Motorola Networks and Enterprise.  “HotZone Duo makes delivering secure and scalable citywide WiFi access easy and cost effective.”

In addition to exceptional radio performance and flexibility, the MOTOMESH Duo solution also features the latest technology and industry standards, including:

  • Dual Radios - 2.4GHz, 802.11b/g and 5.8GHz, 802.11a
  • NEMA 4 environmental rating in a package that weights less than 5 pounds
  • Over-The-Air configuration support for the final IEEE 802.11s meshing standard
  • 802.11e Quality of Service (QoS)
  • 802.11i (WPA2, AES-based) Security
  • Exclusive AES based Hop-By-Hop™ security for all user, management and routing packets
  • Canopy® Connect - Power over Ethernet support for Canopy broadband
The MOTOMESH Duo solution also utilizes MeshPlanner™, a flexible software solution that allows service providers to more efficiently plan, tailor and deploy installations to meet the bandwidth requirements of remote and mobile businesses, public service users and residential subscribers.  Further information about the MOTOMESH Duo solution can be found at: www.motorola.com/mesh.
