Motorola’s MOTOMESH Series of Products Now Offers More Choices for Municipal Wireless Networks

Expanded and flexible portfolio provides greater investment protection and rapid ROI

Schaumburg, Illinois – 24 July 2007 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced two additional radio configurations for the MOTOMESH product series of municipal wireless networks.  Motorola now offers 2.4/5.4GHz and 2.4/4.9GHz versions of MOTOMESH Duo, to expand its two radio meshed WiFi product, currently available in 2.4/5.8GHz configuration.

The additional radio options provide municipalities and network providers with more choices and greater flexibility to best meet the wireless application and coverage needs of end users.  The 5.4GHz model addresses the needs of international customers while the 4.9GHz model introduces secure and dedicated mesh networking at a price public safety departments can appreciate.

“The ability to choose the best combination of meshed WiFi radios allows service providers and municipalities to cost-effectively address all of their customers’ needs,” said Roberta Wiggins, Yankee Group.  “MOTOMESH Duo is ideal for cities, big and small, that are looking to enable next generation solutions for public access, public safety, public works and enterprise.”

MOTOMESH Duo, formerly named HotZone Duo, includes the addition of several new features to allow service providers to more easily respond to end user requirements. Beyond its small form factor, customization characteristics and spectrum flexibility, customers will find added features that provide more cost-effective and easier ways to manage WiFi networks.

Some of the new feature enhancements include:

  • Flexible and adaptable internet gateways – Gateway nodes adapt to the potential loss of backhaul by instantaneously changing into wireless routers and routing traffic to an alternate gateway in the network. This minimizes service interruptions and ensures continuous WiFi connectivity.
  • Advanced management tools - A simple web-based device configuration interface provides anytime, anywhere access to a mesh device’s configuration parameters.  The tool also allows the remote management of small systems.
  • Dual-meshing capability – Each 2.4/4.9GHz MOTOMESH Duo unit comes equipped with two, single-radio mesh devices that provide both access and backhaul capabilities. Spectrum in the 4.9 GHz band can be dedicated to public safety access and backhaul using one radio, while public access and backhaul are provided by the second, 2.4 GHz radio.  Additionally, Motorola’s dual band 2.4 GHz/4.9 GHz PCMCIA card delivers the capabilities of private, dedicated 4.9 GHz spectrum and designated 2.4 GHz spectrum for public access – all in a single client access card.

"Meeting the needs of a wide variety of municipal wireless customers can be challenging.  The ability to choose from a portfolio of cost-effective, customizable networks from one vendor is the right answer,” said Dustin Jurman, president, Rapid Systems, a municipal wireless service provider.  “Continued feature enhancements make MOTOMESH Duo a flexible and scalable solution for networks of all sizes, regardless of location or application.”

MOTOMESH Duo recently received the Wireless Broadband Innovation Award for Best Wireless Broadband Mobility Solution further validating its performance, scalability and robustness.  Additionally, leveraging over 70 years of experience in outdoor wireless deployments and its unique mesh networks technology, Motorola has formally unveiled the MOTOMESH product series, a complete portfolio of high performance, municipal, campus and enterprise wireless networks.  Motorola’s MOTOMESH product series includes MOTOMESH Solo a single radio meshed network with Mobility Enabled Access, MOTOMESH Duo, a two radio meshed network and MOTOMESH Quattro, a four radio meshed network with Mobility Enabled Access.

The MOTOMESH series of products is part of Motorola’s MOTOwi4 portfolio of wireless broadband solutions and services that complements and completes IP networks.  Delivering IP coverage to virtually all spaces, MOTOwi4 includes wi4 fixed, wi4 Mesh, wi4 Indoor, and wi4 WiMAX solutions for private and public networks.  Motorola also offers radio frequency design and management software solutions.
